Panchakarma in Rishikesh — Ayurveda's Deepest Cleanse

Panchakarma Retreat in Rishikesh, India

Panchakarma — literally “five actions” — is Ayurveda's most complete system of purification: a doctor-supervised programme that prepares the body, releases accumulated toxins, and then carefully rebuilds strength from within.

Unlike a massage package or a spa week, true Panchakarma is medicine. It begins with a thorough consultation, follows a protocol prescribed for your individual constitution, and unfolds in stages over days or weeks — which is why it cannot honestly be sold off a menu, and why we never do.

At Pure Soul Yoga School in Rishikesh, your Panchakarma is guided personally by Dr. Bhupinder Singh Arora (M.D. Ayurveda), who brings 16 years of dedicated Panchakarma practice. After your consultation — held online before you travel whenever the doctor is not on-site — he prescribes your exact protocol, its duration and your dosha-specific diet.

Around the treatments, your days are held gently: restorative yoga adapted to your treatment stage, meditation, unhurried rest and fresh sattvic meals cooked for your constitution — all in the quiet of the yoga capital of the world, beside the Ganga.

Daily Schedule

Daily Rhythm During Your Panchakarma

Panchakarma days are intentionally soft. Practice is adapted to your treatment stage — on deeper cleansing days the doctor may prescribe complete rest — and the schedule below is a typical gentle day.

Daily Schedule — Panchakarma Retreat in Rishikesh
  • 06:30 AMWake up — warm water, gentle start
  • 07:00 AM - 08:00 AMGentle Yoga & Pranayama (adapted to your treatment stage)
  • 08:30 AMDosha-specific breakfast
  • 10:00 AM - 12:00 PMPanchakarma treatment (as per your prescribed protocol)
  • 12:30 PMLight Ayurvedic lunch
  • 01:30 PM - 04:00 PMDeep rest / Digital detox (essential to the cleanse)
  • 04:30 PM - 05:30 PMRestorative practice or gentle Ganga walk
  • 06:00 PM - 07:00 PMEvening Meditation
  • 07:00 PMEarly, easy-to-digest dinner
  • 09:00 PMLights off — deep recovery sleep

Your exact rhythm follows your prescribed protocol — treatment days, rest days and diet all change through the three stages of Panchakarma, always under the doctor's guidance.

Life After Panchakarma

The weeks after Panchakarma matter as much as the programme itself:

Experience the Journey

How Panchakarma Works — The Three Stages

Authentic Panchakarma is never a single treatment — it is a staged medical process. Which actions you receive, in what order and for how long, is decided by Dr. Arora after your consultation. Here is the honest shape of the journey:

Panchakarma stages at Pure Soul Yoga School, Rishikesh

Stage 1 — Purvakarma (Preparation) — the body is readied to release: internal oleation with medicated ghee, daily Abhyanga warm-oil massage and Swedana herbal steam soften and mobilise toxins, moving them toward the digestive tract. Skipping this stage is why quick “detox packages” elsewhere don't work.

Stage 2 — The Cleansing Actions — from the classical actions, the doctor prescribes only what your constitution needs: Vamana (therapeutic emesis), Virechana (therapeutic purgation), Basti (medicated enema — often called the king of Panchakarma) and Nasya (nasal cleansing). Most guests receive one or two actions, not all — that is exactly how classical Ayurveda intends it.

Stage 3 — Paschatkarma (Rebuilding) — the stage most centres skip and we never do: a graded return to normal diet (Samsarjana Krama), rejuvenating herbs (Rasayana), rest and daily-routine guidance, so the deep cleanse settles into lasting vitality instead of leaving you depleted.

Throughout — dosha-specific sattvic meals, gentle yoga and meditation adapted to your stage, and the doctor's ongoing supervision with regular check-ins.

Benefits

Benefits of Panchakarma

“Panchakarma does not add anything to you — it removes what was never meant to stay.”

Deep, Genuine Detoxification

Panchakarma is designed to draw accumulated toxins (ama) out of the tissues and eliminate them — a level of cleansing that surface treatments and juice fasts cannot reach, performed gradually and safely under medical supervision.

A Digestive System Reset

Ayurveda regards digestion (agni) as the root of health. The staged diet, cleansing actions and rebuilding phase together give the digestive fire a genuine restart — many guests report lighter digestion for months afterwards.

Relief for a Stressed Nervous System

The enforced slowness — early nights, deep rest, oil therapies, meditation — calms the nervous system profoundly. Guests often describe the second week as the deepest rest of their adult lives.

A Clearer Mind

As the body lightens, the mind follows. Traditional texts and modern guests agree on this one: clarity, steadier moods and better sleep are among the most commonly reported outcomes.

Guidance You Keep for Life

You leave with your dosha understood and a written plan — food, routine, self-care — from a doctor who has spent 16 years practising exactly this. The retreat ends; the knowledge doesn't.

Accommodation and Food During Your Panchakarma

Rest is half the medicine. Every guest stays in a comfortable private room — your own quiet space through the deeper days of the cleanse. The story of us

Why Do Panchakarma at Pure Soul Yoga School?

Rishikesh has no shortage of places offering 'Panchakarma packages'. Here is what makes ours different — and honest:

  • A Real Panchakarma Doctor: Dr. Bhupinder Singh Arora holds an M.D. in Ayurveda with 16 years of dedicated Panchakarma practice. Your protocol is prescribed by a physician, not picked from a brochure.
  • Consultation-First, Always: Nothing is sold before the doctor has assessed you — and if he judges that Panchakarma isn't right for you at this time, he will tell you honestly and suggest what is.
  • The Full Three Stages: Preparation, cleansing and rebuilding — including the Paschatkarma recovery stage most quick 'detox retreats' skip entirely. It takes longer. It's also the only way Panchakarma actually works.
  • You Only Pay for Your Protocol: Because treatments are prescribed individually, your quote covers exactly what your body needs — never a fixed package padded with treatments you don't.
  • A Track Record You Can Check: More than 5,000 students and retreat guests from 50+ nationalities have trained and healed with us since 2019, and Pure Soul is a recommended school on BookYogaRetreats.
  • The Right Setting: Panchakarma asks for quiet, clean air and rest — our campus in Rishikesh, beside the Ganga and the Himalayan foothills, was made for exactly this.

Ayurvedic Care You Can Trust

Meet Dr. Bhupinder Singh Arora — Our Ayurvedic Doctor

Dr. Bhupinder Singh Arora - Ayurveda M.D. and Panchakarma specialist

Every health-focused program at Pure Soul Yoga School is guided by Dr. Bhupinder Singh Arora, who earned his M.D. in Ayurveda from Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Pune, and has been practising Ayurvedic panchakarma for 16 years.

He has served as an honorary professor and adviser to well-known institutions and is the former Head of the Panchakarma Department at SLN Ayurvedic College, Amritsar. Rooted in traditional Ayurvedic lineages, he is known for his pulse diagnosis (nadi pariksha), leech therapy and panchakarma treatments, which have benefited patients across India and abroad.

How your consultation works

  • Before any Ayurvedic treatment begins, you receive a personal consultation with the doctor to assess your constitution (dosha) and health needs.
  • When the doctor is available on-site, your consultation happens in person. If he is not on-site during your stay, your consultation is held online before your treatment starts — no treatment is given without it.
  • Therapies are then personalised to your body and comfort level, and our team checks in with you throughout your program.

Health note: Our retreats and therapies are intended to support general well-being. They are not a substitute for professional medical diagnosis or treatment. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or take regular medication, please consult your physician before booking and share your health details with our team in advance.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma — Sanskrit for 'five actions' — is Ayurveda's deepest system of purification: a doctor-supervised, staged programme that first prepares the body with oil and steam therapies, then releases accumulated toxins through classical cleansing actions such as Virechana and Basti, and finally rebuilds strength with a graded diet and rejuvenating herbs. It is a medical process, not a spa package.

How many days does Panchakarma take?

It depends on what the doctor prescribes for your constitution and goals. A focused programme can be done in 7 days; a complete classical Panchakarma usually needs 14 to 21 days or more, because the preparation and rebuilding stages cannot be rushed. Dr. Arora will tell you honestly what your body needs at consultation.

How much does Panchakarma cost in Rishikesh?

At Pure Soul, Panchakarma is quoted personally after your consultation — because your protocol (which treatments, how many days) is prescribed for your body, your price covers exactly that and nothing padded. Send us your dates and goals, and you'll receive your personalised quote within 24 hours of your consultation. Your stay includes a private room, dosha-specific meals, daily gentle yoga and the doctor's supervision.

Is Panchakarma safe?

Under proper medical supervision, yes — that is exactly why we run it consultation-first. Dr. Arora (M.D. Ayurveda, 16 years of Panchakarma practice) assesses your health before prescribing anything, adapts the protocol to your condition, and monitors you throughout. If Panchakarma isn't right for you at this time, he will say so honestly.

Who should NOT do Panchakarma?

Panchakarma is generally not given during pregnancy or menstruation, in acute illness or fever, shortly after surgery, or in cases of severe weakness — and some individual treatments have their own contraindications. This is precisely why everything begins with a doctor's consultation; mention any condition or medication when you book.

Can I do Panchakarma in 7 days?

A meaningful, doctor-designed 7-day programme is possible — usually focused preparation plus one cleansing action and careful aftercare guidance for home. What we won't do is compress a full classical Panchakarma into a week and call it complete. If your goals need longer, the doctor will tell you before you commit.

What happens in the consultation?

Dr. Arora performs a dosha assessment — pulse reading, lifestyle analysis and detailed questions about your health history and medications — then prescribes your protocol: which treatments, in what sequence, for how many days, and the diet that goes with them. When the doctor is not on-site, the consultation happens online before you travel, so your programme is ready when you arrive.

What should I do before arriving?

Eat simply for a few days before you come (less fried, processed and heavy food), reduce alcohol and caffeine, and rest well — arriving exhausted makes the first days harder. Bring a list of any medications and recent test reports if you have them; the doctor will want to see them.

Will I do yoga during Panchakarma?

Gently, yes — daily soft yoga, pranayama and meditation adapted to your treatment stage. On deeper cleansing days the doctor may prescribe complete rest instead; during Panchakarma, rest is not laziness, it is the treatment.

Is the food safe for international guests?

Yes. All meals are cooked fresh in a hygienic kitchen according to your dosha and treatment stage, filtered drinking water is available around the clock, and everything is kept gentle — Panchakarma food is by design the easiest food in India to digest.

Can I start on any date?

Yes — programmes begin on any day of the month, all year round, because your Panchakarma is individual rather than batch-based. Tell us your preferred dates and we'll arrange your consultation.

Do you help with the Indian visa and airport pickup?

Yes. We provide a visa invitation letter on request, and pickup from Dehradun (Jolly Grant) Airport — about 40 minutes away — can be arranged at extra cost.
