Course Styles

Breathing Exercises Covered During the Training

Here are the main breathing exercises covered during our Pranayama breathwork training in Rishikesh. Each technique is taught under the guidance of a qualified teacher to ensure safe and effective practice.

Diaphragmatic Breathing

Breathing deeply into the belly, allowing the diaphragm to expand and contract fully with each breath. This is the foundational technique every Pranayama practitioner must master before progressing to more advanced work.

Nadi Shodhana & Anulom Vilom

Alternate nostril breathing — inhaling through one nostril while closing the other, then exhaling through the opposite nostril. These practices balance the left and right energy channels and calm the nervous system profoundly.

Kapalabhati Skull-Shining

Rapid exhales through the nose followed by passive inhales — a powerful cleansing technique often used as a warming-up practice. Kapalabhati clears the mind and energises the body for the day ahead.

Bhastrika Bellows Breath

Rapid, forceful inhales and exhales through the nose creating a strong bellows-like breath. Bhastrika builds heat in the body, expands lung capacity and develops pranic energy.

Ujjayi Ocean Breath

Inhaling and exhaling through the nose with a slight constriction in the back of the throat, creating an audible ocean-like sound. Ujjayi builds focus, generates internal heat and regulates the breath during asana practice.

Sheetali & Sheetkari

Cooling breaths — Sheetali involves inhaling through a curled tongue, while Sheetkari draws breath through the teeth. Both practices are exhaled through the nose and are used to cool the body, reduce heat and pacify irritation.

Brahmari Bee Breath

Inhaling deeply and exhaling while making a humming sound like a bee. Brahmari is profoundly calming — it soothes the nervous system, eases anger and anxiety and creates a meditative state of mind.

Viloma, Dirga & Udgeeth

Viloma is interrupted breath with pauses between stages; Dirga is three-part breath flowing through belly, ribs and chest; Udgeeth is chanting breath paired with "Om" or another mantra. Together these practices develop precise breath awareness and spiritual depth.
